Former Pitt defensive end Dewayne Hendrix signed with the Toronto Argonauts of the CFL, the Argonauts announced on Friday.
Hendrix, who transferred to Pitt after his freshman year at Tennessee, totaled 50 tackles, 10 tackles for loss, and 7.5 sacks in his career with the Panthers. He then joined the St. Louis Battlehawks of the XFL, where he posted four tackles and a sack in five games in the spring of 2020.
Following his stint with the Battlehawks, Hendrix bounced around the NFL, being signed and released by the Miami Dolphins, Chicago Bears, Jacksonville Jaguars and Pittsburgh Steelers. He has yet to play in an NFL game.
Hendrix, 24, will be teammates with former Steelers wide receiver Martavis Bryan in Toronto. Fellow Pitt alum, wide receiver Rafael Aruajo-Lopes, played for the Ottawa RedBlacks in 2019.
The CFL did not play its 2020 season due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The free agency period for the 2021 season opened on Feb. 9. The teams will play a 21-game schedule beginning on June 10 and wrapping with the 108th playing of the Grey Cup in Hamilton, Ontario on Nov. 21.
