For many, Pitt’s pro day on Wednesday will be a replacement for another event that was cancelled by the COVID-19 pandemic.
Six Pitt players: center Jimmy Morrissey, safeties Damar Hamlin and Paris Ford and defensive linemen Patrick Jones II, Jaylen Twyman and Rashad Weaver will have the pro day serve as the replacement for their trip to the 2021 NFL Scouting Combine, which was canceled this spring.
Instead, the players will perform timing, strength and agility drills at UPMC Rooney Sports Complex in the presence of scouts from all 32 NFL teams.
A few others are trying to replace the opportunity they lost last year. Pitt linebacker Saleem Brightwell, quarterback Jeff George, Jr., tight end Will Gragg, wide receiver Aaron Mathews, safety Jazzee Stocker and defensive tackle Amir Watts will all participate in drills after not being able to do so following the 2019 season, when last spring’s pro day was canceled at the very start of the pandemic.
Those players are hoping a year away from the game will be forgiven under the circumstances and that the full house expected for Pitt’s top stars will also be willing to give them a look.
Also participating on Wednesday will be 2020 senior guard Bryce Hargrove, kicker Alex Kessman and wide receiver DJ Turner. The event will start at 10:15 a.m. and will be broadcast on ACC Network Extra.
