Former Marshall Guard Jarrod West Puts Pitt In Top 3, Sets Decision Date

Jeff Capel will learn in two days whether his program will land the veteran point guard that they’ve been searching for.

Marshall transfer Jarrod West tells Pittsburgh Sports Now that he will announce his decision on Wednesday and will be deciding between Pitt, Louisville and Ohio State.

West recently entered the transfer portal after concluding a standout career as the point guard for the Thundering Herd. During those four seasons, West was a 1,200 point scorer and proved on a yearly basis to be one of the top defensive guards in Conference USA.

The Clarksburg, West Virginia native and the Zoom conversation that he had with Jeff Capel left a big impression on him and a reason Pitt is a finalist for his services.

“Coach Capel and that coaching staff are very good at what they do,” West told PSN on Monday. “You can tell how excited they are about their team and how hungry they are to be good this season. They have been honest and consistent through this entire process and that goes a long way for me. We’ve stayed in touch everyday since I entered the portal and that also means a lot to me. The coaching staff aren’t just good at being coaches, they are all great people. That is something my family and I were very attracted to from the start.”

Last season at Marshall, West averaged 12.5 points, 6 assists and 2.5 steals per game and shot 45.8% from the field and 40.8% from 3-point range, which were career bests. Those numbers earned him Second Team All-Conference USA along with being named to the Conference USA All Defensive Team as well as the All-Academic Team.

West would provide a veteran compliment to freshman Femi Odukale and some much needed skilled depth at that crucial position.
