The Duquesne and Pitt basketball programs rarely go after the same recruit but that could be happening now over a senior point guard.

Class of 2021 three-star guard Jackie Johnson from Hargrave Military Academy in Chatham, Virginia has told Pittsburgh Sports Now that he’s been in contact and having good conversations with Pitt and Duquesne. Johnson (6-foot, 175 pounds) currently holds offers from St. Bonaventure, East Carolina, Coastal Carolina, Montana State and North Texas.

At this point, Johnson doesn’t have offers from either program but that could change in the near future. He lists those two programs plus St. Bonaventure as the teams he’s having the most frequent and serious talk with.

“The recruitment I’m getting right now from all programs right now I believe is good,” Johnson told PSN. “It’s been a pleasure to be able to talk with all the programs that have been in contact with me and they’re all saying real good stuff.

“With Duquesne, I started talking with them a couple of weeks ago. I’ve talked with Coach Dambrot a whole lot, also with Coach (Rick) McFadden and Coach Charles (Thomas). I like Duquesne, it seems like a really good place, they’re in a really good conference and I look forward to continuing to build my relationship with them. They’re telling me that they’d like me to come in and make a big impact right away. They want me to be someone that can get everyone involved, score a lot and play good defense. I just think the whole situation at Duquesne is good, like I said good coaches, solid conference, Pittsburgh is a great city and they play a good style of basketball.”

Johnson told PSN that he’s already done a Zoom Call with the Dukes coaches and looks forward to talking to them more in the future. In terms of Pitt, Johnson says that that he’s hearing a lot of the same things from their coaching staff in terms of what he can bring to the program. At Pitt, Johnson says his communication has mainly been with Milan Brown.

“One of the biggest things that I bring to any team is that I’m a winner because everywhere I’ve been I’ve won,” said Johnson. “On the court, I believe I can really pass the ball along with being able to score. I consider myself a good leader and off the court, I believe I’m someone that my teammates want to be around. I’m looking for a place that has a really good family environment with their program.”

Johnson mentioned that he can score, which was shown recently as he scored 54 points, nine rebounds and seven assists in a scrimmage against Oak Hill Academy. Johnson told PSN that he’s been talking lately with his mom about coming up with a date to make his decision and while he wasn’t specific about a date, he says that he’d like to make his decision sooner rather than later.
