Former Clairton and Penn State Safety Lamont Wade Signs With Steelers as Undrafted Free Agent

The Steelers have turned to a product of their own backyard for depth in the secondary.

Following the draft, Pittsburgh has signed Pittsburgh native, Clariton and Penn State alum Lamont Wade, NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero announced via Twitter.

Wade, a 5-foot-9, 187-pound defensive back, recorded 153 tackles, 6.5 tackles for loss, three sacks, 11 pass breakups, four forced fumbles, three fumble recoveries and an interception in 47 career games at Penn State.

He is also a valuable player on special in teams. Wade scored on a 100-yard kickoff return in 2020 and spent extensive time on the kickoff and punt coverage teams for the Nittany Lions.

Wade is a talented tackler with versatility as a defensive back, as he spent time at cornerback and safety.

He will join former Penn State teammate Marcus Allen on the Steelers’ defense, as well as Penn State tight end Pat Freiermuth, who was selected by Pittsburgh in the second round.

Good Luck! Maybe he can switch to LB/S due to his lack of speed when covering NFL WRs. He’s very physical and great at tackling & special teams, so I hope he can stay positive and make the team.
