WPIAL Football Championships Returning to Heinz Field in 2021

After being forced to find a new location in 2020 due to COVID-19 restrictions, the WPIAL football championships will return to the North Shore.

Heinz Field will once again be the host for the high school football championships in Western Pennsylvania.

While the championship games will be played on Thanksgiving weekend, the exact dates for the games haven’t been determined. The WPIAL executive director Amy Scheuneman tells the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review that they are exploring the idea of hosting the games in one day or are looking into possibly spreading the games out over two days, which would be something different. The cost of Heinz Field for two days will play a large factor into that decision. If the WPIAL chooses to spread the games out over two days, two games will be played on Friday and three will be on Saturday.

Keep in mind that the WPIAL Class 6A championship will not be played at Heinz Field. Because of the state playoff bracket, the 6A finals will be played on either November 19 or 20, a week earlier than the other classifications.

Last season, the WPIAL football championships were played at North Allegheny’s Newman Stadium and North Hills Martorelli Stadium.
