With Week 1 of high school football in the rearview mirror, let’s look ahead to this Friday the top WPIAL High School football season. Barring any cancellations, every local team will be in action either this Friday or Saturday.
To keep you informed on the top matchups of the week, in conjunction with our partners, WPIAL Sportsmen, here are what we believe are the top 10 matchups of the weekend. In case you missed it earlier this week, we revealed our updated high school football rankings plus our Top Six performers from Week One.
TOP 10 GAMES OF THE WEEK AROUND THE WPIAL/CITY LEAGUE:
Brashear vs. Westinghouse– Brashear started the season with big expectations and are now 0-2 with Westinghouse up next, who we think is one of the best teams in Western PA.
South Fayette at Thomas Jefferson– Gang Green has been rolling but now it’s time to play big boy football against Thomas Jefferson, who is considered one of the best teams in the state and has that look of a special team chasing another state title.
Central Catholic at Pine-Richland- This is always a highly competitive game and now with Pine-Richland sitting at 0-2, they will be viewing this week as the Super Bowl to prevent an 0-3 start. Central Catholic is loaded and will use the same recipe, which is to rely on a dominant defense and a steady, run heavy offense.
Central Valley at Aliquippa- Central Valley looks like they have the team to compete for another state title in 3A. Aliquippa is one of the best teams in 4A. This will be an action packed game between 2 elite teams.
Gateway at Penn Hills- Two teams who had a lot of momentum going into their games last week but both lost and are now are trying to get back on track. Good opportunity to watch two of the best 10th grade quarterbacks in the state on the same field in Brad Birch and Julian Dugger. Should be a lot of fireworks in this game.
McKeesport at Armstrong– McKeesport continues to find a way to win by running the ball and playing dominant defense. Armstrong is coming into this game knowing this is their first real test. Armstrong is going to spread the field and will be looking to see if they can throw the ball with Cadin Olsen, like they did wiht ease the first two games.
Moon at Woodland Hills– We elevated Moon to the #1 team in 5A after their big win against Seneca Valley in Week 0 and they rolled again last week. Woodland Hills is coming off of a loss to McKeesport and will be trying to prevent back to back losses.
Mt. Lebanon at Peters Twp– Both teams are 2-0 and play a similar style, where they are looking to lean on their defense and run the ball on offense to setup big plays in the passing game.
Penn-Trafford at Belle Vernon– Good vs. Good!! We want to see what elite guys do when their is resistance. Their will be a lot of resistance applied by both teams. Star players will find ways to make big plays in games like this to push their team to victory. Who will be that star player?
Seneca Valley at North Hills- Seneca Valley is coming into this game after their monster come from behind victory against Pine-Richland. They’ll be facing a tough, undefeated North Hills team who have some big-time playmakers with Dickerson and Tracey.
