2023 4-Star/Top 40 Recruit Johnathan Lamothe Reacts To Visit From Jeff Capel; Talks Pitt

Jeff Capel made a recruiting road trip to Baltimore on Monday to visit one of the top juniors in the nation.

Jahnathan Lamothe is a 2023 4-star shooting guard that attends St. Frances Academy in Baltimore, Maryland. Lamothe is a 6-foot-4, 185-pound combo guard that is ranked as the No. 33 player in the Class of 2023 according to 247 Sports, and is one of the most physically-imposing players in the class.

Lamothe is someone that Capel is very high on and believes that could excel in a lead role in his program. Because of that, the Panthers staff has recruited him very aggressively. Back on June 11, Lamothe made an unofficial visit to Pitt and Capel followed that up with an in-person visit on Monday.

Pittsburgh Sports Now spoke to Lamothe on Monday evening to get his thoughts on a number of topics, the first of which was what stood out to him about June visit to Pitt.

“I knew going into the visit that it was going to be nice because of how they treated me even before I got there,” said Lamothe. “Since they offered me and since they have been allowed to talk to me, it’s been constant communication and we’ve developed a really nice vibe. The campus and how nice Pitt’s arena was a couple things that really stood out to me about the visit, along with the conversation that I had with Coach Capel.”

The conversation and attempt to strengthen the relationship continued on Monday when Capel made an in-person visit to watch this coveted junior practice.

“I talked to Coach yesterday (Sunday) and he told me that he would be coming up. Today, he was happy to see me and told me afterwards that I did great in practice. He told me that he would love to coach me because of the way that I play and the system that I play in.”

“My impression of Coach Capel is that he really is just a normal guy and he is such a great guy and easy guy to talk to. I can really tell that his interest in me is high and legit. He cares about me and a conversation with him is like having one with a regular guy, although he’s a guy that’s been everywhere,” said Lamothe. “He’s a cool guy to talk to and someone that I can tell that I’m able to talk with about a lot of things. Him being a guy that’s seen so much at places like Duke, Oklahoma and VCU and now knowing that he has this much interest in someone like me, it’s such a good feeling.”

As you can imagine, Lamothe is being pursued by many big programs and has no intentions of making a college decision anytime soon.

“I know that it’s definitely is not going to be this year. Sometime next year, maybe at the start of my senior year or in December of my senior year for my birthday or if I haven’t made a decision by then, it would probably be on my moms birthday.”

“Lamothe is being recruited by many big programs and won’t be making a decision anytime soon.” And he won’t be making a decision to play at Pitt either. . . none of these “offers” ever do.
