RMU Falls to NC A&T in Big South Opener, 41-14

Robert Morris is still looking for its first conference win as a member of the Big South.

The Colonials, who joined the conference ahead of the abbreviated 2020-21 spring season, went 0-3 in their first go-around in their new league.

The start to the 2021 campaign didn’t go much better as fellow Big South newcomer North Carolina A&T scored 21 unanswered points to run away from RMU for a 41-14 rout at Truist Stadium in Greensboro.

The Colonials moved the ball in the first half, twice driving into A&T territory, but not coming away with points after a failed fourth-down conversion and a sack of quarterback George Martin pushed RMU out of field goal range.

The Aggies responded by scoring on three of their first four possessions to take an early 13-0 lead.

In the second half, Martin found D’Andre Hicks for an 8-yard score to get Robert Morris back into the game.

But A&T returned the ensuing kickoff 35 yards to the RMU 45, and two players later, Jalen Fowler threw to Zach Leslie for a 22-yard score to re-establish a two-possession margin for the Aggies for the half.

RMU again drew to within a touchdown when Jonathan Wynn broke off a 40-yard scoring rush in the third quarter to make it 20-14. But the Aggies scored on three consecutive possessions after that to secure an easy victory.

North Carolina A&T moved to the Big South from the MEAC after the 2019 season. The game was the Aggies’ first in the Big South after not playing in 2020-21. Robert Morris is now 0-3 in league play since joining the Big South.

The Colonials (1-2, 0-1) will host Charleston Southern next Saturday at Joe Walton Stadium.
