With the game on the line, and Pitt needing to keep getting first downs, Pickett wanted to call his own number on a critical third down on the final drive of what became a 27-17 victory over Clemson at Heinz Field on Saturday.
Pickett got his wish, and he got the first down, dragging a would-be tackler across the line of gain.
“I knew the situation in the game, where if we got two more first downs, it was kind of over,” he said. “I knew they were burning timeouts. I told them to keep the ball in my hands. I wanted to do it myself, get the first. Those guys up front did a great job. It was a great call.”
