Pitt Jumps Four Spots in College Football Playoff Poll After Win over Duke

While the ACC likely suffered a fatal blow in its chances of securing a team in the 2022 College Football Playoff over the weekend, Pitt’s spot in the CFP Poll became more secure with a 54-29 win over Duke.

Pitt jumped four spots to No. 21 in the most recent poll, checking in as the third highest ranked ACC team.

Georgia remains the top team in the nation, coming off a 43-6 throttling of Missouri, while the trio of Alabama, Oregon and Ohio State rounds out the current playoff teams — despite all three teams struggling in respective matchups over the weekend.

Cincinnati rose a spot to No. 5 despite struggling against Tulsa in a close win. However, in the case of all four teams that struggled over the weekend, a win is a win. And the same can’t be said for Michigan State.

The Spartans fell out of the playoff picture, tumbling to No. 7 after a loss to then-unraked Purdue. Michigan, despite a loss to Michigan State this season, rose above the Spartans to the No. 6 seed after a win over Indiana.

Oklahoma, Notre Dame and Oklahoma State round out the Top 10 of the latest poll.

Wake Forest’s 58-55 loss to North Carolina dropped the Demon Deacons to No. 12, likely ending any hopes of an ACC playoff team with the loss. North Carolina State rose to No. 16 with a 28-14 win over Florida State. Wake Forest will play NC State on Saturday in a game that will likely decide the ACC Atlantic division.

Pitt’s win over Duke bumped the Panthers up to No. 21 and maintained a lead in the ACC Coastal division.

Pitt was ranked 25th in the Week 11 AP Poll and 22nd in the Week 11 USA TODAY Coaches Poll. To check out the full CFP Poll, click here.
