For the second time this month, a Pitt linebacker has made the decision to enter the transfer portal.
Earlier this month, inside linebacker Wendell Davis choose that route and today so did freshman linebacker A.J. Roberts.
The freshman from Staten Island, New York was a three-star recruit in Pitt’s Class of 2020. Roberts was recruited to Pitt by Tim Salem and selected the Panthers over other offers from Boston College, Duke, LSU, Purdue, Rutgers, Syracuse, Temple and UMass.
Roberts released this statement on Twitter regarding his decision to leave Pitt:
“I would first like to thank the University of Pittsburgh for a great education system and the wonderful people that came with it. I am grateful for the teammates I played with and bonds I have made with them. Memories will always last forever and I wish nothing but the best for them. I hope my guys take it all the way. I was able to have a great experience at the University of Pittsburgh and I appreciate everyone that was involved in helping me have that experience. Right now, I have to do what’s best for myself and my future. With that being said, I will be entering the transfer portal.”
Pittsburgh Sports Now reached Roberts following his decision and he told us this decision was made because of future playing time and his desire to find an opportunity to get on the field.
At the Mike linebacker, he has SirVocea Dennis and Brandon George ahead of him. At Money linebacker, it’s Phil Campbell, Bangally Kamara and Solomon DeShields.
Roberts will four seasons of eligibility remaining.
Best of luck to AJ moving forward – looks like he got recruited over, so hope he finds a good landing spot.
It’s one thing to move on but these guys are just quitting on their teams in the middle of the season. Why not wait for the season to end?
Was he recruited, did he reach out? It’s the way it is today. Can’t get on the field, leave. Expect one or more qbs to leave before the Blue Gold game.
Clemson lost an assistant coach plus players so far this season.
When Tua was named starter at Alabama the entire freshmen qb corp transferred.
why don
t kids look at the depth chart before making a decison on committing to a school. If you feel you can
t make that jump in 4yrs. Actually i call it stupidy on his part. If he couldnt make it at pitt sure won
t at Lsu or boston collegehow about go across town an see if you can make duquense football team it probably more on your level. You most not be a divison 1 level type player. Other wise no confidence in your self . Nothing is ever given to you you have to earn playing time on any team from junior high through college .
