While the Pitt basketball program is still awaiting their first commitment for this season, they landed a big one for the Class of 2023.
Sunday afternoon, 4-star shooting guard Marlon Barnes (6-foot-6, 180 pounds) announced his commitment to the Jeff Capel and the Pitt Panthers. Barnes is from Brush High School in Cleveland, Ohio, the same high school of current Pitt center John Hugley.
Barnes is ranked by Rivals as the No. 79 prospect in the Class of 2023 and No. 123 by 247 Sports. Barnes has made multiple visits to Pittsburgh, including ones in June and September.
Following his latest visit to Pitt, Barnes had this to say to Pittsburgh Sports Now: “John [Hugley] always says something about me coming,” Barnes said. “He might say something like ‘When are you going to come down here to Pitt? Or ‘It’d be crazy if Chet [Mason] sent two players to Pitt.’ He said that a couple of times yesterday. Me and coach [Capel], we have a good relationship,” he added. “We talk quite a bit. I talk with Coach Jason as well.”
Pittsburgh Sports Now will have plenty more coming up on this big commitment for the Pitt Panthers.
“Commitment” means nothing to these guys. I’ll believe it when he signs.

As we just learned (some don’t ever) with Mintz….these commitments mean literally nothing. And even moreso with the longer the period of kid being only a junior in HS.
By the time he gets here (if that ever happens), Hughley will be gone. So another factor in whether he’ll ever put on a Pitt uniform.
