The combination of freshman Jackie Johnson and Primo Spears were key figures in Duquesne’s win at UMass and one of those players is getting some conference recognition.
Following his 27-point performance on Saturday, Johnson was named the A-10 Rookie of the Week. The 5’11” guard finished the game against the Minutemen with a game-high 27 points, which was his second 27-point game of the season. A majority of Johnson’s production came in the second half, when he scored 16 points, including a crucial basketball with :10 seconds left that extended Duquesne’s lead back to 5 points.

For the season, Johnson is averaging 9.6 points and shooting 48% from the field and 44% from 3-point range in 17.6 minutes per game. In the last four games where his minutes have increased to 25 per game, Johnson is averaging 16 points.
Johnson joins fellow guard Primo Spears, as Dukes that have won A-10 Rookie of the Week honors this 2021-22 season.
Duquesne (6-7, 1-0) will look to get their overall record back to .500 and increase their win streak to four games on Wednesday when they take on Fordham (8-5, 1-0). Tipoff from the Bronx, New York is set for 7 PM and the game can be viewed on ESPN+.
