The 2022 college football season is still months and months away, but coming off an 11-3 season capped with the first ACC title in program history, the expectation for Pitt next season will be just as high — if not higher.
Despite the loss of Kenny Pickett as he heads to the NFL, USC transfer Kedon Slovis is (likely) stepping in to lead an offense that’s loaded with Jordan Addison, Jared Wayne, Akron transfer Konata Mumpfield, Israel Abanikanda, Gavin Bartholomew and skill position groups loaded with potential.
The defense is reloading with a couple of key starters exiting the program via the draft, graduation or transfer portal, but it’s once again a unit that will consistently get after the quarterback — with young guys like Dayon Hayes emerging as the season wears on.
The 2022 schedule is starting off with a bang, hosting West Virginia in a renewal of the Backyard Brawl at Heinz Field on a Thursday night.
The non-conference schedule continues with rematches against 2021 opponents Tennessee and Western Michigan. Rhode Island also will make a trip to Heinz Field to round out the non-conference slate.
Pitt will host WVU, Tennessee, Rhode Island, Duke, Georgia Tech, Syracuse and Virginia Tech at Heinz Field in 2022 and will be on the road against Western Michigan, Louisville, Miami, North Carolina and Virginia.
The Tennessee matchup should be another high-scoring affair with Vols quarterback Hendon Hooker returning for one last season, and of course, the Western Michigan game is a shot at redemption.
A two-week stretch at Louisville and North Carolina in the middle of the season provides a big test for Pitt. And Pitt finishes the regular season with Virginia’s Brennan Armstrong and Miami’s Tyler Van Dyke — both on the road — sandwiched around Duke at home.
The ACC Championship Game is set for Saturday, Dec. 3 at Bank of America Stadium in Charlotte, North Carolina once again. The Coastal division is ripe for the taking, but Pitt’s schedule is set up for a nail-biting end of the season concluding in Miami.

Is G-Tech home or away? Article states both.
GTech is at home. 5 home games by 10/8.
Thanks, Mike. Did eventually look elsewhere. We should have decent weather for all those early games.
Glad to see the “Backyard Brawl” back in action. I’d rather see it played in November, but we will take it. WMU has a good looking squad returning, with game in Kalamazoo. Good looking schedule to be sure. All the best to the students here in the off season. Go Pitt!
