The Backyard Brawl Set for Thursday, Sept. 1 Under the Heinz Field Lights

The Backyard Brawl hasn’t taken place in over a decade, but with the rivalry resuming this season, one of the most storied rivalries in college football is starting back up under the lights.

Pitt will host West Virginia on Thursday, Sept. 1 in ESPN’s Thursday Night Opener at Heinz Field. The exact start time is still to be determined.

WVU finished the 2021 season with a loss to Minnesota in the Guaranteed Rate Bowl following a 6-6 regular season. With incumbent starter Jarret Doege hitting the transfer portal, the Mountaineers will roll into Heinz Field on Sept. 1 with a brand new starting quarterback — likely a freshman or sophomore option with little experience.

Pitt has lost three consecutive Backyard Brawl matchups dating back to 2009, but the most memorable edition in recent memory came in the famous 2007 matchup when Pitt ruined WVU’s season with a late-season loss to take away a national championship bid.

Pitt is 61-40-3 all-time against WVU in a series that dates back to the 1895 season. While the Brawl hasn’t taken place in a while, the renewed rivalry is one of the most hyped returns of the 2022 season.

Pitt will also kickoff the 2022 season with a new quarterback, most likely USC transfer Kedon Slovis, so a fast start against the Mountaineers in Week 1 will be pivotal in putting together another strong season.

Story. Friend was in Louisville for a Pitt fb game. Cardinals fan ask “why are WVU fans so shitty?” Heather can count me out for that one.
