On Saturday night, Robert Morris received some good news on the recruiting trail as post grad guard TJ Wainwright committed to the Colonials.
Wainwright is a 6-foot-3 guard who plays for the postgrad team down at the prestigious basketball school Montverde Academy. Just one week after he took an official visit to RMU, he is now committed to the program.
“The coaches have told me that the transfer portal hasn’t worked out well for them, so getting a guy like me that’s not in high school but a post-grad guy that’s seasoned and that’s comfortable running a team is what they need,” Wainwright told PSN ahead of his official visit last week. “With my style of play and the way I can run a team and get a bucket for myself when needed that I would fit in really well. He said they’ll be minutes for me to play right away.”
Wainwright is initially from Los Angeles, California, but decided to take advantage of a prep school year and moved out to Florida to attend and play for Montverde. There, he was noticed by several more coaches than before, including RMU’s Andy Toole.
“Coach Toole is a very basketball-oriented guy,” he said. “He came down to one of my practices and afterwards, basically told me everything that I was doing right and what I was doing wrong. I completely agreed with him and areas of my game that I need to work on and improve. Coach Toole really knows that he’s talking about and is a real basketball guy.”
Wainwright is ranked as the No. 267 player in the nation and a three-star prospect according to 247 Sports. The point guard prides himself on his ability to make plays and create for others and should make a solid impact rising through the Colonials program over the next few years.
