“That was a nice way to finish the regular season with a solid win on the road,” Pitt coach Keith Gavin said. “Our focus will immediately shift to the upcoming ACC Championships and making sure we’re ready to go for the postseason.”

Pitt never trailed in the meet, as Gage Curry earned a major decision over Logan Agin at 125 pounds. That was followed by Phillippi’s pin of Drake Doolittle at 5:27 of the 133-pound match. Cole Matthews, the No. 6 wrestler in the nation at 141 pounds, followed with a major decision over Patrick Rowland.

Duke’s set of brothers earned wins at 149 pounds and 174 pounds, as Josh Finesilver earned a major decision over Dan Mancini and Matt Finesilver got a tech fall against Hunter Kernan. The Blue Devils also got a win at heavyweight, with Jonah Niesenabum defeating Jake Slinger.

Pitt won all the rest, with Elijah Cleary winning and Jake Wentzel, Gregg  Harvey and No. 8 197-pounder Nino Bonaccorsi all earning major decisions.

Pitt is now 9-0 all-time against Duke. The Panthers finished in fourth place in the six-team ACC during the dual-meet season. The 2022 ACC Wrestling Championship will be held Sunday, March 6, 2022 at John Paul Jones Arena on the campus of the University of Virginia.

At the ACC tournament, Pitt will hope to qualify wrestlers for the 2022 NCAA Championship, which will be held in Detroit March 17-19.
