Report: RMU Hall of Famer Lucky Jones Attempting to Flee Ukraine Amidst Russian Invasion

Nj.com reported that Jones was able to successfully cross the border into Romania on Thursday night. From there, he is reportedly planning to fly to the Netherlands and return to the United States safely this upcoming weekend.

According to a report by NJ.com’s Keith Sargeant, former Robert Morris star and current professional basketball player Lucky Jones is currently in Ukraine attempting to return to the United States.

In the report, Sargeant confirms that Jones, who just last week was inducted into Robert Morris’ athletic hall of fame, has been playing for BC Turnopil, a team in the Ukrainian SuperLeague.

Over the past few days, Jones has reportedly attempted to leave the nation via airplane, but due to Russian forces seizing control of Antonoc International Airport, he has been forced to attempt to flee to nearby Romania by bus alongside his teammates.

“He was just really panicky, saying, ‘I gotta get out of here. I don’t know what’s going on. It’s crazy,’” Jones’ wife, Marissa told NJ Advance Media in the article. “He actually said that to me, ‘I’m scared because I don’t know what’s going to happen, and I want to get out of here.’”

Jones, who played for RMU from 2011-12 through 2014-15, started 94 games in his Colonial career. He scored an average of 12 points per game, and grabbed an average of 6.2 rebounds per game He left the program as the program’s all-time leading rebounder with 846 rebound in his career.
