A six unanswered goal stretch by Canisius (4-0) led to a 12-10 victory over Pitt’s women’s lacrosse team (3-2) handing them their first losing streak in program history.

Neither team was able to establish a footing in the first quarter with the two teams heading into the second tied at 3-3. Paige Petty had two of Pitt’s three goals in the first, overall she had half (five) of the team’s 10 goals in the game.

Caroline Netti, who also tied things up with less than two minutes in the first, scored the first goal of the second quarter to give Canisius a 4-3 lead. Canisius outscored Pitt 3-1 in the second, with the last goal coming with only 28 seconds left on the clock.

Pitt scored three straight goals to grab their first lead of the game in the third quarter at 7-6. However, with about three minutes left in the third to about six minutes left in the fourth, Canisius scored six straight goals to take a 12-7 lead. And despite Pitt scoring three goals within the last five minutes, they were unable to complete the comeback and fell 12-10.

Petty and Caroline had a combined 10 of the game’s 22 goals between the two teams. Pitt saw four different players score, with Madisyn Kittle (two), Katie Smolensky (two) and Kierin Ratliff-Kailbou (one) scoring Pitt’s other five goals.

The stats represent the score in demonstrating how close the game was. The two teams tied in both shots (27) and turnovers (21) while Pitt also had a one-shot lead with shots-on-goal (20-19).

Shannon Maroney picked up the win for Canisius with 10 saves while Paulina DiFatta picked up seven saves in the loss. Pitt’s record on the season, and all-time, is now 3-2 with their next game at Highmark Stadium against Virginia Tech next Saturday at 1:00 p.m.
