Pitt and Steel Valley alum Paris Ford was drafted by the New Jersey Generals in the fourth round of the 2022 USFL Supplemental Draft on Thursday.

Ford, who left Pitt in the middle of the 2020 season, spent last summer with the Los Angeles Rams after joining the team as an undrafted free agent. He did not make the club coming out of training camp and did not play elsewhere last fall.

A 6-foot, 190-pound strong safety, Ford played in 29 games over three seasons for the Panthers, racking up 147 total tackles, six tackles for loss, six interceptions, three forced fumbles and 20 passes defended.

Ford was a first-team All-ACC selection during his redshirt sophomore season in 2019, but left the Pitt program in the middle of the next season, following the team’s loss to Notre Dame on Oct. 24, 2020.

He had been projected to be a Day Two or Day Three draft pick, but following a 4.9-second 40-yard dash time at Pitt’s pro day, Ford fell out of draft consideration.

The Generals drafted Aliquippa and WVU alum Dravon Askew-Henry and NFL veteran Shalom Luani at the safety position in the league’s initial draft in February.

All eight teams in the newly reformed league are set to start playing in April. All regular season games will be played in Birmingham, Alabama. The playoff and championship games will be played in Canton, Ohio.

The Generals’ first game will be the opener for the league, with its game against the Birmingham Stallions on April 16 televised by both NBC and FOX.

Great player. Unfortunately he took some really bad advice in leaving when he did. Best of luck to this guy.

He’s been ridiculed enough. Gotta love a comeback story. Could be just the beginning of it. I’m rooting for him.
