Updated Pitt Basketball Scholarship Board Following Diaz-Graham Commitments

Jeff Capel began the off-season with the monumental task of trying to fill eight open scholarships brought about by transfers and graduations.

The rebuild began with the addition of transfer point guard Nelly Cummings, followed by the signings of wing Blake Hinson and forward Federiko Federiko. Late Wednesday afternoon, Pitt earned commitment No’s. 4 and 5 with the additions of Spanish twin forwards Jorge and Guillermo Diaz-Graham.

With these five newcomers, the Panthers have added a point guard, a wing and three forwards.

Here’s a look at what the complete Pitt 2022-23 depth chart looks like, with still three scholarships able to be used.

Looking at the depth chart and three open scholarships left, Pitt will no doubt bring in a veteran guard. Along with a guard, I would suspect Capel looks to add a veteran big man to either play alongside or behind Hugley. While Federiko and the Diaz-Graham brothers add size, they don’t bring any experience and very little bulk. Look for that to be a priority.

As far as the last scholarship, it’s not a lock that Capel uses it and could instead use to save it for his class of 2023, unless he’s able to bring in a graduate transfer or a player with super senior eligibility. If Pitt decides to use up that scholarship, I would look for them to add a wing with the ability to slash to the hoop and who’s a threat to score.

As things stand now, Pitt will enter the season with three seniors- Jamarius Burton, Nike Sibande and Nelly Cummings.
