Matthews took on Rutgers rising junior Sammy Alvarez in the quarterfinals and thoroughly defeated him 13-2, with 5:09 riding time.

He then faced off Nebraska rising junior Ridge Lovett in the semifinals. Matthews and Lovett fought a tough match, but Matthews managed to take a slim, 6-5 victory to make it to the final.

Matthews came up against Ohio State rising redshirt junior Dylan D’Emilio in the final and beat him 8-4. Matthews got revenge on D’Emilio, who defeated him in a match, 4-3, last December.

The win means that Matthews could wrestle for the Team USA at the U23 World Championships in Spain in October.
