PSN Poll Question: Has Your Opinion Of Future of Jeff Capel and Pitt Changed?

Published

on

It’s hard to have any real excitement or optimism for the upcoming season when you finish the previous season with a record of 11-21.

While it’s hard to do so, it’s not impossible. Jeff Capel has been able to do it, especially over the last few weeks.

After a number of transfers, the Pitt staff went into this off-season with the difficult task of trying to fill 8 open scholarships for the upcoming season and to their credit, they’ve done so and in an impressive fashion. The roster was set on Monday with the surprise addition of four-star guard Dior Johnson.

With Johnson and newcomers Nelly Cummings, Blake Hinson, Greg Elliott, Cashius McNeilly, Jorge-Diaz Graham, Guillermo Diaz-Graham, Fede Federiko along with the return of John Hugley, Jamarius Burton and Nike Sibande has created some excitement with Pitt basketball. In fact, Capel will be coaching his most talented and deep team since arriving at Pitt.

The good news continued on Wednesday with the commitment of 2023 4-star combo guard Carlton Carrington. Capel previously received a commitment from 2023 4-star wing Marlon Barnes.

After years of losing, is the fan base buying into the excitement?

Our PSN poll question is, has your opinion changed in a positive way of the future of Jeff Capel and Pitt basketball?

My opinion of Coach Capel has not changed. I ALWAYS felt that he was the right choice and still do. Maybe the curse has finally lifted.

STILL, still is the toughest basketball conference in America. 500 in conference will be a good show. Everyone thought the ACC was having a down year last season until the tournament. How many conferences would sell their souls to have a team in the Final Four. The ACC had TWO. Get your wins before conference because every game in conference will be a dog fight. Jamie didn’t have the guts to coach in the ACC.

Certainly looks better on paper but still need to show results on the court. Won’t hurt to have a little luck as well. H2P!

That’s my thought, too. Capel seems to underachieve even when he has some talent on the roster. All the Top 100 recruits in the world aren’t going to make a difference if he can’t get his guys to play fundamental basketball.

You poll presumes the reader thought ill of Capel prior to the recruiting season. A No answer could have 2 meanings – the reader thought Capel was doing a good job prior to the recruiting season (and hasn’t changed) and the reader thinks Capel was doing a bad job and the recruiting season hasn’t changed their mind. Which reflects your pessimism for the upocoming season. Capel was hired into a situation that had not only a a previous bad recruiting class but had lost its recruiting base areas and now had the transfer portal to deal with. He has shown… Read more »

Opinion has not changed, but I am certainly willing to give him another season or 2 to see if he can develop and retain talent while keeping the recruiting momentum going.

Sure, the season is certainly more exciting at this point. As ppl have mentioned, it comes with the caveat that he actually has to win games. He has done a good job in some other seasons getting us excited and then they lay a turd in the back half of the season. I’ll be happy if he proves me wrong. This is the most talent they’ve had, so they should no doubt have a winning record.

I always loved the Capel hire , I’ll admit his last few recruiting years were rough but he definitely got some great recruits this year along with players from the portal . Should be a fun year . …….Anybody hear from Rob ? Cmon Rob bring that negativity ……it’s got to be a hot one in the parent’s basement today

Beano Cook Said Ron Powlus was going to four Heismans going to Notre Dame out of high school from Berwick.
Not my fault Walt Harris was going to run the ball all over people with Dustin Picciotti from CBW.

Let it play out. Could be next Jason Gwaltney / Rushel Shell / Brian Davis …

What makes you assumeeverybody was down on Capel. Recruiting was not bad. Keeping the malcontents happy was. The transfer portal has not helped with team building. It is now essentially a free agent market. The rich get richer while the mediocre will stay mediocre and the bottom feeders will be SOL.

To this point regardless of the players Capel has has not proven his staff can coach, or that he won’t drive his players to the portal because he has not shown he put players in the positions they feel comfortable. If he plays Jefferies at Guard, instead of SF, he will need to get out. To this point he has not shown he can place his players were they are comfortable rather then force them into positions he has needs, big mistake.

Recruiting was not bad? Have you been in a coma since 2018? He’s been filling the roster via the portal…

I agree with you guys. I always thought Jeff would be able to get talent. It takes a while to build relationships and get kids to come to pitt. It looks as though capel has finally broke through in that regard, Now we have to see if Jeff is capable of being a good coach.
My opinion hasn’t changed much. Once he starts winning games on the court then I’ll say that my opinion has changed

I never heard of VCU until Capel made them annual March Madness participants. Then he went to Oklahoma, recruited Blake Griffin, and won a national championship. Returning home to Duke, he was instrumental in the recruiting of Zion Williamson along with other coaches. He was in line to be Duke’s next head coach when coach K retired. Everyone knew that. That’s why he could not get recruits last year. Coach K announced his retirement, so everyone expected Capel to leave to take over at Duke. Who would come to Pitt knowing he was leaving. Now that Duke went in another… Read more »
