Pitt senior pitcher Matt Gilbertson earned a spot on the 2022 ABCA/Rawlings East All-Region Second Team, the organization announced on Wednesday. There are eight all-region teams, and the players are voted by the members of the American Baseball Coaches Association (ABCA).
Gilbertson becomes just the fourth player to earn all-region honors under head coach Mike Bell. He served as the No. 1 pitcher for the Panthers in the 2022 season. He led the team with a 9-3 record, but also with his 3.74 ERA, 15 starts, 96.1 innings pitched, 88 strikeouts and 1.17 WHIP. Gilbertson finished third in the ACC with nine wins, fourth in innings pitched, eighth in strikeouts and second with just 11 walks allowed.
Gilbertson also earned Second-Team All-ACC honors for his work this season, becoming just the eighth player under Bell to make an All-ACC team. In ACC play, Gilbertson started 11 times, posted a record of 7-4, 79.2 innings pitched and struck out 57 batters while walking only seven.
