Serra Catholic’s Elijah Ward, Amire Spencer Show They Can Play with D-I Talent

WILKINSBURG Pa. — Imani Christian has two Division-I recruits in quarterback Dayshaun Burnett and running back David Davis, but on Friday night at Graham Field, it was Serra Catholic quarterback Elijah Ward and wide receiver Amire Spencer who were the standout players. Ward and Spencer each had two touchdowns to power the Eagles to a dominating 47-12 victory.

“Honestly, I ain’t really worried about that,” Spencer said about going up against Burnett and Davis, both of whom have Penn State looking at them. “It’s just a game for real. Them boys are definitely good, but honestly, I just came in ready to show them like why they should, you know what I mean?”

Ward echoed a similar statement as Spencer.

“That’s a good team. Those are good players,” Ward said about Burnett and Davis. “They got D-I offers and we just shut it down, for the most part.”

Ward had rushing touchdowns from 25 and 6 yards out, while Spencer had two 50-plus yard touchdown receptions from Quadir Stribling. Serra Catholic switched Stribling and Ward at quarterback throughout the game.

“I just do whatever my coach asks me to do and try to execute,” Ward said on his two rushing touchdowns, one of which was a designed quarterback run.

Ward also made plays on defense, as he had an impressive one-handed interception off Burnett.

“I just read the ball and caught it with one hand,” Ward said on his pick.

Spencer took the top of Imani’s defense and displayed impressive speed on his two long touchdowns receptions.

“I was just looking for a big play,” Spencer said.”Like, when I’m waiting for my coach to call a play, I’m just hearing make a big play always.”

With a record of 4-1, Serra Catholic is one of the top teams in the WPIAL in the Class 2A classification.

“We just got to keep looking on forward,” Spencer said. “We’re trying to go to the state championship, honestly.”

Ward has offers from Division II Westminster and Division III Waynesburg so far. Spencer just received an offer from Clarion and has several Division II schools looking at him.

“I’m just grinding. Finish my senior year,” Spencer said about the recruiting process
