The bulk of the remnants of Hurricane Ian appears to be cycling through the Pittsburgh area throughout the day Saturday, but that doesn’t mean it won’t be a chilly, rainy night at Acrisure Stadium.
It only makes sense that Pitt-Georgia Tech is scheduled to kick off Saturday night under the lights at the Ac — a ‘Roc the Royal’ night planned on the field and in the stands.
Georgia Tech is coming off a rough opening stretch of the season, losing its head coach after a fourth consecutive poor start to the season, and Pitt’s status as a heavy favorite is indicative.
Pitt is coming off a 45-24 win over Rhode Island to close non-conference play with a 3-1 record while Georgia Tech is coming off a 27-10 loss to UCF to conclude a tough opening month that featured Clemson and Ole Miss with a 1-3 record.
Pitt is 11-3 all-time against Georgia Tech, dating back to an original 1918 matchup. Pitt won the first five matchups between 1918-76. Georgia Tech won back-to-back meetings in 2013-14, but Pitt has won six of seven matchups since then.
That includes four straight wins for Pitt, including a 52-21 win in Atlanta, Georgia last season in which Kenny Pickett’s 389 yards and four touchdowns established his Heisman Trophy campaign.
It’s been a tough season for Georgia Tech, one in which head coach Geoff Collins has been fired following a 10-28 tenure, and the Yellow Jackets are currently 1-3 on the season.
