IUP Scores Late to Claim Coal Bowl Victory
For the first time since 2006, No. 18 Indiana (Pa.) walked into Adamson Stadium and came out on top with a 22-21 victory over California (Pa.)
The Crimson Hawks trailed by two touchdowns entering the fourth quarter, but they put together two scoring drives to edge the Vulcans.
It was a touchdown connection between quarterback Mak Sexton to wide receiver Isaiah Houser that got the Crimson Hawks within striking distance. Then, with 1:27 left in the game, running back Dayjur Stewart punched in a one-yard touchdown.
With one last gasp, Cal U drove deep into IUP territory, but with seconds on the clock, the Vulcans took an illegal motion penalty which ran the clock down to end the game.
IUP’s defense came up big throughout the game, forcing Cal U quarterback Noah Mitchell to throw an interception, while he was sacked three times. The defense also limited the Vulcans’ ground game to 54 yards. The Crimson Hawks now climb to 5-0 on the season.
Big Day for Antonio Wright Powers Gannon Over Edinboro
Sophomore running back Antonio Wright cruised to 213 yards on the ground and three touchdowns in Gannon’s 35-17 win over Edinboro.
Along with Wright leading the ground game to a season-high rushing total, quarterback Kory Curtis also put together a strong performance. The redshirt junior quarterback threw for 159 yards and two touchdowns.
The defense also had a say in the victory, as the Golden Knights forced four interceptions. Defensive back Chris Farnsworth snagged two interceptions from Edinboro quarterback Isaac Bernard.
Gannon is off to one of its best starts in program history, as its current 5-1 record is the best start since 2003 and the 3-0 mark in conference play is the best start since joining the PSAC.
Slippery Rock Secures Bounce Back Win
No. 20 Slippery Rock returned to the win column with a 31-17 win over Mercyhurst, improving to 2-1 in conference play.
On the opening play, Slippery Rock set the tone with a 97-yard kick return from Jawon Hall (Central Valley). From there, The Rock ran out to a comfortable lead going into the half and then never looked back.
Quarterback Noah Grover tossed three touchdown passes in the winning effort, while the defense lived up to its expectations, holding Mercyhurst to 31 rushing yards and forcing two interceptions.
Clarion Cashes in on Seton Hill Miscues in Win
A blocked field goal return and safety were just moments of a 40-13 display for Clarion over Seton Hill.
Clarion jumped out to a three-score lead thanks to a rushing and receiving touchdown from quarterback Zach Benedek (Elizabeth Forward) to go along with the 67-yard field goal block that was returned for a touchdown. Despite not throwing for a touchdown, Benedek added another receiving touchdown to go along with his two scores from the first half.
Robert Morris’ Woes Continue in Homecoming Defeat
Robert Morris was shutout 48-0 by Gardner-Webb in its Big South opener at Joe Walton Stadium on Saturday.
Freshman quarterback Zach Tanner was given the reigns against the Runnin’ Bulldogs, but it was a day to forget as the Colonials drop to 0-5. Tanner completed 12 out of 26 passes while throwing two interceptions. RMU’s running game continues to struggle after being held once again to less than 100 yards.
Gardner-Webb’s quarterback Bailey Fisher tossed three touchdowns while the running back unit racked up 306 yards and four scores.
Carnegie Mellon Sneaks Past Waynesburg, Remains Unbeaten
No. 18 Carnegie Mellon scored a late touchdown to prevail 27-20 over Waynesburg to improve to 6-0.
Wide receiver Dominic Voiland caught a 10-yard touchdown pass from Ben Mills with 1:09 left in the fourth quarter to lift the Tartans over the Yellow Jackets. The Tartans also received help from the ground game as freshman Willem Bouma ran for 147 yards and a touchdown in the winning effort.
Grove City Hangs 55 on Bethany on the Road
Grove City’s talented offense rolled past another victim on Saturday with a 55-7 victory over Bethany.
Quarterback Logan Pfeuffer and company poured on 41 unanswered points in the first half. On the day, Pfeuffer finished with 209 passing yards and three touchdowns. The ground game also exploded for the Wolverines, totaling 295 yards as six rushers eclipsed the 25-yard mark.
The Wolverines’ defense also stood tall, forcing three fumbles, including a Ben Bladel (Moon) scoop and score for 30 yards.
Big Fourth Quarter Pushes W&J Past Westminster
Washington and Jefferson came alive in the fourth quarter to slip past rival Westminster, 17-14.
Westminster got on the board in the first half after Brice Butler returned a 77-yard interception to the end zone. However, the Titans fell silent and were shutout the rest of the way. W&J responded in the fourth quarter with two touchdowns from John O’Rourke (Central Catholic).
The Presidents grabbed their first win in the series since 2017 as they improve to 5-1 on the year and 3-1 in conference.
Geneva Clinches First Win of 2022 Over Allegheny
Geneva’s offense came together on homecoming to clinch its first win of 2022, defeating Allegheny 35-21.
The Golden Tornadoes saw big days from multiple players, including wide receiver Hilton McClain Jr. who hauled in two touchdowns along with 149 receiving yards. On the ground, Brutus Ogilvie and Logan Kent reached 100 yards while adding their own touchdowns.
Ground Game Powers Case Western Reserve Over Saint Vincent
Case Western Reserve scored five times on the ground in a comfortable 45-21 win over Saint Vincent.
Senior running back Antonio Orsini (Upper St. Clair) led the charge for the Spartans with 89 yards and three touchdowns in the winning effort. While the Spartans’ run game went to work, the rush defense also showed up, limiting Saint Vincent to 40 yards on the ground.
Case Western Reserve now moves to 3-1 in Presidents Athletic Conference play, while Saint Vincent falls to 1-2 in conference.
