Pitt FB Recruiting

Pitt Offers Talented 2024 Mississippi QB Anthony Maddox Jr.

The Pitt football program has no doubt expanded their recruiting territory over the last few years, especially trying to have some success down South.

The talent-rich state of Texas is a place the Panthers have been able to land a few commitments from and this year, they had success in Tennessee with 4-star quarterback Kenny Minchey.

Thursday night, Pitt put their hat in the ring for an intriguing prospect from another state they rarely recruit.

Class of 2024 three-star quarterback Anthony Maddox, Jr. (6-foot-2, 175-pounds) from Hattiesburg, Mississippi received an offer from Pitt following a conversation with assistant quarterbacks coach Jonathan DiBiaso. This was the second Power Five offer from Maddox, with his first coming from Nick Saban and Alabama.

As he made his way to school Friday morning, Pittsburgh Sports Now talked with Maddox about his conversation with DiBiaso and his early thoughts on Pitt.

“I’m really grateful for the opportunity that Pitt gave me,” said Maddox. “Coach called me yesterday evening. I was just leaving practice. I’m very familiar with Coach DiBiaso. He texted me a while back and I didn’t get a chance to text him back because I was new to Twitter, and I really didn’t understand it. But I sent him some of my recent game film and he really liked what I had to offer. He liked the way I could improvise, the way I moved outside the pocket, he liked my arm strength and my knowledge of the game. We talked last night for over thirty minutes just about football and about what’s going on at Pitt. I’m just really grateful. It was a shocker, but I truly am grateful.

“I can’t say that I was totally surprised because I knew that my game film is pretty legit. I knew the background of Coach DiBiaso and the type of quarterback that he likes. I feel that I would really fit in with Pitt’s playing style, with the run-pass option, just all the type of things they try and do on offense. Like I said, he really liked my improvisation and the way that I’m able to extend plays. I really feel like Coach DiBiaso and I have a connection.”

During their conversation, aside from talking about his game, DiBiaso did his best to educate Maddox about the Pitt program and what they’re building.

“He really wanted to let me know more about Pitt,” said Maddox. “Honestly, aside from Kenny Pickett and that wide receiver that they had last year, I really didn’t know a lot. Coach did a great job of explaining the winning culture that exists and told me that I would fit in really well in their quarterback room because they have quarterbacks from all around the country. I really appreciated him saying that and helping me to know more about Pitt.”

Maddox has the feel of a prospect who’s recruiting is about to take off so Pitt getting in early could end up being a good thing. He tells PSN that this weekend we’ll be attending the Alabama/Mississippi State game and is currently hearing a lot from programs such as Michigan State, Mississippi State, Ole Miss, LSU, Louisville and Florida State.

“Location of the college will not be a factor for me. I’m definitely going to come to Pennsylvania soon to visit Pitt,” said Maddox. “I’m really open to go anywhere, as long as me and my brother have a chance to play at the same school. My brother is currently a 4-star recruit and has offers from everyone in the country. We’re waiting on Pitt to see him and offer. I’m definitely looking forward to visiting Pitt this season and see what it’s all about.”

Anthony’s brother is 2025 four-star defensive tackle Andrew Maddox (6-foot-4, 265), who is rated by Rivals.com as one of the Top 50 sophomores in the country with offers from Alabama, Arkansas, Florida State, Indiana, Ole Miss, Mississippi State, Texas and Texas A&M.

What’s your point on Hugh Green? Maddox already has an Alabama offer and he’s from the south. Not a chance he comes to pitt

Yea I’d say Hugh did well. 2nd in the Heisman and several year All-American.
Pitt recruited the Deep South very well under Majors & Sherrill.

Hopefully he didn’t hear Narduz….saying he prefers running the ball to passing.
Stupid to say it…..even if you believe it.
