Leading up to Pitt basketball’s first game of the season on Nov. 7, Pittsburgh Sports Now will release profiles of each player on the active roster, including the walk-ons.
We continue our All-14 series with a junior walk-on who returned to Pitt this year after several years away from the program:
KJ MARSHALL
Hometown: Reading, Pennsylvania
Height, Weight: 5’10, 175 LBS
Position: Guard
Number: 12
Year: Junior (Walk-On)
Last year: Marshall played last season at Mars Hill University (Division II) in North Carolina. He played 17 games for Mars Hill last season, averaging just over three points and two rebounds per game. Marshall shot 82% from the free-throw stripe.
The storyline: Marshall returns to the Panthers after walking-on back in 2019. Since that season, Marshall has spent time at Garden City Community College (2020-21 season) and Mars Hill University (2021-22) but has now made his way back onto the Pitt team. The walk-on guard has made a big impact in practice, as Jeff Capel stated after Pitt’s exhibition win over Clarion recently.
Jeff Capel on Marshall’s impact:
“To be able to get rotations and to be able to get guys to play as hard as they can, that’s been a little difficult for us in practice as we only have nine scholarship guys that are able to go right now,” Capel said. “KJ Marshall has done an unbelievable job in practice of helping us so we can do some 5-on-5.”
