No. 18 Pitt Wrestling Shuts Out Cleveland State, 36-0, to Open the 2022-23 Season

No. 18 Pitt shut out Cleveland State Friday night. 36-0, to open up their 2022-23 season with a victory.

The Panthers (1-0) last competed against the Vikings (0-1) in December 2012, where the Panthers also won, 38-6. It is the 10th straight season that the Panthers started the season with a win, with six of those coming under head coach Keith Gavin.

The most important match saw redshirt sophomore Pitt No. 24 Reece Heller face off against Cleveland State redshirt junior No. 33 DeAndre Nasser in the 184-pound weight class. Heller and Nasser fought the most competitive matchup of the dual meet, with Heller winning a 3-2 decision, thanks to an incredible takedown.

Panthers redshirt senior No. 1 Cole Matthews started his 2022-23 campaign with a 9-3 decision over redshirt junior Hunter Olson in the 141-pound weight class. Fellow Panther redshirt senior No. 9 Nino Bonaccorsi also won with a 9-2 decision against Vikings redshirt senior Anthony Perrine, 9-2 in the 197-pound weight class.

Many Pitt wrestlers won on major decisions against Cleveland State. This includes redshirt senior No. 8 Micky Phillippi in the 133-pound weight class, senior No. 11 Dazjon Casto in the 157-pound weight class and redshirt junior No. 15 Holden Heller in the 165-pound weight class. Reece and Holden Heller are both brothers who both transferred from Hofstra.

Two other major decisions for the Panthers came from redshirt first-year Luca Augustine in the 174-pound weight class and redshirt sophomore Tyler Badgett in the 149-pound weight class.

Panthers redshirt junior Colton Camacho opened up the dual meet with a major decision in the 125-pound weight class. Senior Jake Slinger finished the dual meet with a 3-1 decision over redshirt sophomore Daniel Bucknavich in the heavyweight class.

Pitt opens at home next Friday, Nov. 18 with a matchup against Maryland at Fitzgerald Field House.
