No. 18 Pitt shut out Cleveland State Friday night. 36-0, to open up their 2022-23 season with a victory.
The Panthers (1-0) last competed against the Vikings (0-1) in December 2012, where the Panthers also won, 38-6. It is the 10th straight season that the Panthers started the season with a win, with six of those coming under head coach Keith Gavin.
The most important match saw redshirt sophomore Pitt No. 24 Reece Heller face off against Cleveland State redshirt junior No. 33 DeAndre Nasser in the 184-pound weight class. Heller and Nasser fought the most competitive matchup of the dual meet, with Heller winning a 3-2 decision, thanks to an incredible takedown.
