Quinton Martin Looking to Help Change the Narrative for Belle Vernon in Title Game

MONROEVILLE, Pa. — Friday night showcased one of the WPIAL’s top players in Belle Vernon’s Quinton Martin where he faced off against Freeport in a semifinal matchup. Belle Vernon was able to pitch a shutout of Freeport 42-0.

In the matchup, the Leopards ran all over Freeport’s defense, which helped control the game. The Leopards saw three different players record multiple touchdowns with quarterback Braden Laux rushing for two, and running backs Quinton Martin and Jake Gedekoh each recording a pair of their own.

Quinton Martin is the heart and soul of this Belle Vernon squad. He is the team’s top rusher averaging just around 10 yards per carry and a leader in the secondary that recorded four interceptions in the semifinal victory, and 17 overall on the year.

In the win, Martin recorded touchdowns of 45 and 26 yards. The 45-yard touchdown came on a screen pass where Martin lined up on the outside as a receiver and then continued to break tackle after tackle. On defense, Martin snagged an interception and nearly returned it for another score. Martin finished the game with 94 rushing yards, 86 receiving yards, two touchdowns, and an interception.

With a dominant rushing attack and a greedy defense, the top-ranked Leopards entered the Class-3A playoffs with high expectations from outside and within the program. The Leopards have appeared in six straight semifinals, winning three of their last four but have failed at winning a WPIAL title in each of their last six appearances dating back to 1995.

The Leopards’ head coach Matt Humbert is no stranger to this fact and reminded the team after the victory that this should be celebrated, but to remember the main goal ahead: a championship. He compared it to beating levels on a video game, but not beating the game itself. He ended the post-game huddle on the field with a question to his team: What will you do better than your opponent next week?

“Throughout the week we are going to practice really hard and do what we have to do. We are going to do everything [at] 100%,” said Martin to Pittsburgh Sports Now after the game in regard to his coach’s question.

The expectations are as high as ever for this Leopards team and Martin looks to be a part of the group that changes the narrative of Belle Vernon football.

“It would mean a lot to me, this program, and my team because we have not had a champion for a long time and we are going to try our best to get there.”

Martin is a five-star recruit with a long list of offers that include Pitt, Penn State, Ohio State, and Tennessee just to name a few. Within the last few months, Martin has taken trips to Penn State and Ohio State but adds that nothing is serious as of right now.

Next Friday, Belle Vernon travels down to Acrisure Stadium to face off against Avonworth for the WPIAL Class-3A championship that is scheduled to kick off at 5 p.m.
