Pat Narduzzi Explains Pitt DE Dayon Hayes’ Participation Against Duke

A preliminary hearing for Dayon Hayes’ charge of simple assault is scheduled for Tuesday afternoon, following his arrest earlier this month, but the charge didn’t lead to Pitt holding him out over the weekend.

Hayes played 28 snaps against Duke, recording two tackles (one solo) in his return to the lineup after not traveling to Charlottesville, Virginia for the UVa game and being removed from the weekly two-deep depth chart.

His return to the lineup against Virginia, according to Pat Narduzzi, came after Hayes “paid a price with the team.”

“Yeah, obviously he missed one game,” Narduzzi said Monday at the UPMC Rooney Sports Complex. “Like I said, there’s — you’re always innocent until you’re proven guilty. But we kind of made him guilty until he’s innocent. So, he’s paid a price with the team, he’s paid a price on the field. He was out for a week.

“Again, spent some time down in what we call the Pit down there doing some stuff with (strength and conditioning coach) Michael Stacchiotti. So, we’ll wait to see where that whole thing goes. And then, you know, move on from there.”

The day after Hayes’ arrest, Narduzzi released a statement through the Pitt athletic department.

“The incident involving Dayon Hayes is incredibly disappointing and concerning. I take all disciplinary matters very seriously, and that is especially the case with situations of this kind. Our players know they are accountable for their actions, both on and off the field. I’ve conveyed this to Dayon, who will be immediately subject to team disciplinary measures in addition to any legal consequences that may arise. The details of that discipline will remain a private matter.”

Hayes’ situation will become clearer after his 12:30 p.m hearing at the Pittsburgh Municipal Court.

There’s an outside chance Coach knows something we do not. We don’t know the facts of the case. But, it looks bad, I think.
