Pitt FB Recruiting

Farrell Files Pitt: Decisions to make in portal?

Published

on

Lots of fun rumors flying around for Pitt football with the portal and recruiting and I have my thoughts on some in this Farrell Files Pitt Edition.

— Let’s start with Derrick Davis Jr. The RB/DB from Gateway chose LSU over Pitt and many others a couple of years ago and can play running back or safety (or linebacker) in college as he was flipped around in practice at LSU. He’s in the portal now and so many schools are interested it’s hard to follow. DB Donovan McMillon chose Florida over Pitt also in 2021 and the two are now talking. I’m not sure what that means for Pitt but I’ve heard Davis wants to play closer to home as does McMillon.

Pitt needs to land one of these transfers and it would be a home run to land both. Pat Narduzzi as a defensive coach helps but there is going to be stiff competition and some could come from in state with Penn State involved with both as high school recruits and possibly now as well.

Personally I except Pitt to land both McMillon and Davis and take the latter as a running back.  But here’s the question as a fan. Do you want them? Honestly this is a question the staff asks themselves as well and I’ll tell you why. If they take both players from the WPIAL after choosing other bigger programs out of high school it sends a message to others that Pitt is a solid backup option if you go off and don’t have success. That’s never good. And secondly do they need them? Personally I think they do as the staff can use these players as examples to others in state about how it’s not always rainbow and sunshine out of state.

My prediction— both land at Pitt based on early limited info from sources. Remember they are new to the portal as this is an ever changing world.

— I have a feeling fellow former WPIAL standout Dante Cephas from Kent State lands at Penn State over Pitt and others. There is a lot of confidence coming from the PSU side of things here.

— I’m hearing things are good with Shadarian Harrison again — for now. The DB from Florida is being pursued heaving by in state schools FSU and Miami and he likes the attention as any recruit would. The pressure down at Lakeland is strong to stay around but Pitt has done a great job settling what looked like a rough situation. But trust me when I tell you this, the 3 star is far from locked in for good. The next week is going to be rocky and he could delay signing until February. The good news? Miami and FSU are over recruiting the state with late offers as contingency plans for potential recruiting losses and this was made clear to Harrison as he is No. 1 priority for Pitt.

— Finally, I like new RB commit TJ Harvison for a couple of reasons. He’s big and physical and he’s only getting better as shown by his huge state title game over 200 yards. He’s prefect for this offense as a durable back who gets stronger with more carries. He complements Montravius Lloyd as well who isn’t as fast or as good off contact but might be better as a receiver. And finally he’s from Georgia which is an area everyone in the country wants to recruit better and gives Pitt a 1-2 punch at RB from the Southeast.

I would love to see some big O-linemen come in here too.
Never too many big guys in the trenches.

Don’t rely on spellchecker exclusively. More than one spelling error in this report.

AA kid, very low level in GA (which is probably the same as the best football in PA).

Don’t care what kind of message it sends by signing local kids that originally left town, the only question the staff needs to ask is “will this player help the team”. If the answer is yes, then take him.
