On Thursday, former Pitt forward Justin Champagnie was waived by the Toronto Raptors, ending his time with the organization.
Champagnie, 21, was in the Raptors’ organization for the past two years after going un-drafted out of Pitt. The 6-foot-6 forward was just days away from his contract becoming fully guaranteed.
He played in 36 games last season for the NBA’s Raptors, averaging 7.8 minutes and 2.3 points per game. He scored 81 points and grabbed 72 rebounds in that rookie campaign.
This year, he only appeared in three games for the Raptors, averaging just 3.7 minutes per outing.
Champagnie starred in the NBA G League with the Raptors’ affiliate Team 905. Across his 14 games with the G-League squad, Champagnie averaged 19.9 points and 9.1 rebounds per game while shooting 51% from the field and 30% from three-point range.
The former 1st Team All-ACC forward spent two seasons at Pitt, averaging 12 and then 18 points per game in the two years, respectively. The Brooklyn, New York native played 53 games in a Panther uniform and scored 779 points in his two years in the Steel City.
tough news. maybe he will sign on somewhere else. loads of injuries this season.
Someone who definitely could have benefited from one more year of college ball. I know anyone sees the $$$ is gone but prime example here of leaving too early.
Is Bob Nutting the owner?
Good guy..hopefully a contender picks him up and gets a ring for his trouble.
