Pitt redshirt junior Reece Heller received NCAA Wrestler of the Week and ACC Wrestler of the Week honors on Tuesday for his great performance last Friday night against Virginia Tech in Blacksburg, Va.

Heller pinned Hokies No. 7 first-year Hunter Bolen (15-4) at 4:32 in the second period at 184 pounds. He earned five points for his pin, with the referee deducting a point for unsportsmanlike conduct after Heller’s celebration. The pin put the Panthers up 20-12 in the match and essentially sealed their victory, 26-12 over the No. 7 Hokies.

Heller is 15-3 overall and 6-2 in duel meets in 2022-23. He transferred with his brother, redshirt senior Holden Heller, from Hofstra in the offseason. He also won the Midlands Championships at 184 pounds at the end of December, which also earned him ACC Wrestler of the Week honors.

Pitt is now 8-2 overall and 2-0 in ACC play. The win over Virginia Tech, the first in Blacksburg, Va. since 2004, put Pitt up in the latest poll to No. 18 in the country.

They take on ACC foe, North Carolina, this Friday, Feb. 3 at 7 p.m. at the Petersen Events Center for sole possession of first place in the conference. Pitt then faces off against No. 3 Iowa State on Saturday, Feb. 4 at 7 p.m. at Fitzgerald Field House for their highest ranked opponent they’ll wrestle against this season.
