On Tuesday night, history was made in WPIAL basketball as Aquinas Academy’s Vinnie Cugini became the WPIAL’s all-time scoring leader, scoring 33 points to leap past Tom Pipkins’ record of 2,838 points.

Cugini set the record with a free throw late in the game, surpassing Pipkins’ long-standing achievement. Despite the record-setting night, Aquinas fell to The Neighborhood Academy in front of a packed gym that included many of Cugini’s neighborhood friends and supporters.

The Aquinas star is a 6-foot-2 senior guard who is committed to play basketball at the Division II level at Pitt-Johnstown.

Cugini is averaging more than 46 points per game this season for Aquinas, who sits at 14-3 on the season and 3-3 in Class A Section 3 play. He finished with 33 points in the loss on Tuesday night, and will forever be remembered around Pittsburgh for his legendary high school career.
