Jeff Capel Updates Nelly Cummings’ Injury Status Ahead of Boston College Game

After suffering an injury in Pitt’s recent matchup against Florida State, Nelly Cummings sat out for the remaining 12 minutes while Nike Sibande, Jamarius Burton, and Greg Elliott held down the back court.

On Monday, head coach Jeff Capel addressed Cummings’ injury status, saying that he will play in Pitt’s upcoming matchup against Boston College on Tuesday night.

“He’ll play for sure,” Capel said. “Look, this time of year, everyone is a little bit banged up. Everybody. And so, we didn’t really do much yesterday, we just kind of walked through some things yesterday. He was able to get treatment before and after practice yesterday, he was able to get treatment this morning, he’ll do it again before practice here at one o’clock, he’ll do it afterwards. He’ll be able to play, but I don’t know if he’ll be — he certainly won’t be 100 percent.”

Cummings, the team’s 6-foot starting point guard, is averaging 10.5 points per game and a career-best 4.4 assists per game this season. He is currently shooting 35% from three-point range on the season and has hit eight of his last nine three-point tries across Pitt’s last two games, both wins. While Capel did not specify what exactly the injury was, Cummings appeared to turn his foot awkwardly when coming down from a jump shot in Saturday’s win over Florida State.

Pitt is riding a five-game winning streak heading into Tuesday night’s game against Boston College which will tip off at 9 p.m. The Eagles come into Pittsburgh with a 12-14 (6-9 ACC) record, while Pitt stands at 18-7 (11-3 ACC).
