Pitt Buries Boston College 77-58 for Sixth-Straight Win

PITTSBURGH — Pitt’s pursuit of an ACC title continued in the right direction on Tuesday night, as the Panthers buried Boston College with a massive 21-2 second-half run en route to a 77-58 victory.

Throughout the first 24 minutes of action, the Eagles hung around with Pitt behind solid offensive showings from Jaeden Zackery and Mason Madsen.

However, after BC cut the Panthers’ lead to just five with around 16 minutes remaining, Pitt finally turned up the volume offensively.

Looking to the team’s stars — Blake Hinson, Nelly Cummings and company — the Panthers blew this game open and ignited the late-night crowd at the Petersen Events Center.

After Cummings drained a three with 15:47 to go, Hinson followed with a wide open deep ball of his own. Jamarius Burton, Federiko Federiko, Greg Elliott, and Nike Sibande also added buckets during the run, making this game out of reach for the ice-cold Eagles, who missed 11 shots in a row in the same time frame.

Hinson led Pitt with 21 points on the night (7-15 FG), followed by Elliott who added 14 (4-9 FG)  and Cummings who finished with 11 points (5-9 FG) to go along with his season high-tying eight assists. Hinson’s 6-for-11 night from beyond the arch highlighted a strong three-point shooting performance for the team, which finished 11-25 from beyond the arch as a whole.

For the Eagles, Madsen finished as the team’s leading scorer with 14 points. Quinten Post, the team’s star, finished with seven points and five rebounds on the night to go along with four turnovers and five fouls.

With the win, Pitt advances to 19-7 on the year and 12-3 in ACC play and retains first place in the conference.

Pitt’s next game comes on Saturday, as it will travel to Blacksburg, Virginia to face Virginia Tech at 5 p.m. on Feb. 18. Virginia Tech is currently 15-10 on the season and 5-9 in conference play.
