The 2022 season is firmly in the rear-view mirror now, and the class of 2023 recruiting class isn’t far behind it, so Pitt’s coaching staff is looking toward the future — toward 2024.
It’s already been a highly successful winter, landing four-star wide receiver DayDay Farmer in December and three-star running back Juelz Goff and defensive lineman Ty Yuhas in 2023. A recruit like Daniel Coles is another prospect that has mutual interest.
Coles — a 6-foot-2, 205-pound athlete from Brooke Point High in Stafford, Virginia — narrowed his list of offers to just 10 Tuesday. That list includes Virginia Tech, Boston College, East Carolina, Penn State, Duke, Louisville, Maryland, West Virginia, Connecticut and Pitt.
“I always wanted to make my parents proud, thank you to everyone who has supported and helped me get here… Recruitment still 1,000% open,” he wrote on Twitter.
Coles received an offer from running backs coach Andre Powell and Pitt over a year ago, with an official offer extended on May 20, 2022, and if the relationship is to progress, it will be important to land Coles on an official visit to Pittsburgh in the weeks and months ahead.
According to recruiting aggregators, Coles has made unofficial visits to Duke, Maryland and Louisville and multiple to both East Carolina and Virginia Tech.
It remains to be seen if Coles will make a visit to Pittsburgh this spring or summer, but he’s an intriguing prospect to watch nonetheless.
As a junior at Brooke Point, Coles did it all. In just two recorded games on MaxPreps, he completed 11-of-18 pass attempts for 157 yards and three touchdowns, racked up 240 yards and two touchdowns on 39 carries and added 60 yards and a touchdown on two receptions. And he made an impact defensively, too.
247Sports hasn’t rated Coles yet, but he holds a 5.5 Rivals Rating and the 22nd-ranked slot in the state of Virginia. On3 rates him as the 65th-ranked athlete and the 15th-ranked recruit from Virginia.
Pitt’s 2024 class is currently ranked inside the Top-30 by both 247Sports and Rivals, with the three aforementioned commits and four-star defensive tackle Jahsear Whittington.
