West Virginia’s Erik Stevenson Rips ACC, Says WVU Would Win League ‘By Five Games’

Published

on

West Virginia's Erik Stevenson.

On Friday, West Virginia wing Erik Stevenson sounded off on the state of the ACC during a press conference.

“Like Pitt, they’re winning the ACC right now,” he said. “We go into the ACC and win the league by five games. There’s no question about it. There’s nobody even in that league that could play in our league. Maybe Miami, maybe Pitt if you want to say that but I think they’re just having a good conference year.”

In November, Stevenson dropped 16 points on 7-for-12 shooting in the Mountaineers’ blowout victory over Pitt by a score of 81-56. West Virginia is currently 15-11 (4-9 Big 12) , while the Panthers are 19-7 (12-3 ACC).

Throughout the season, national media and fans around the country have spoken about the ACC having a down year. Pitt is currently tied for first in the league with Virginia at 12-3 in conference play.

Six of the Big 12’s ten teams are currently ranked in the top 25, including Kansas (No. 5), Texas (No. 6), and Baylor (No. 9) in the top ten. The ACC currently has just three teams ranked, and one in the top ten (Virginia – No. 7).

In Joe Lunardi’s recent bracket prediction, West Virginia was on the bubble as one of the “Last Four Byes,” while Pitt was comfortably in the field as a No. 9 seed.

Having been at the game and witnessed his high school antics that earned him a spot on the bench for most of the first half, I guess his chippiness extends off the court as well.

Made for TV game, Capel was dealing with a set of new players and Hughley. Needless to say the team jelled after Hughley’s injury. Not the same team but one which beat the team which beat the #1 ranked team this week.

And lost to a team that Alabama beat by 50. And lost to a team that Duquesne dominated. And lost to a mid tier Big 10 team by 30. Simply put, Pitt is enjoying a ton of success in a watered down league, and enjoying uncommon good fortune in close games.

Don’t have one. Alum of Duquesne (BS) and Pitt (MBA/MPA). For the sake of good order, my immediate family has earned 10 Pitt degrees. Doesn’t cloud my judgment. I know a poser when I see one and we have one coaching MBB

When no one wanted the mbb job, Capel applied. He first had to clean up the disaster Barnes/Stalling, then two years of Covid. I think thanks are in order. Schuyler is doing a bang up job with Krzyzewski’s 5 ***** ‘s, as is Hubie in UNC. It’s tough not getting every call Coach K and Dean and Roy got.
Hear the Dukes are doing well.

Must be getting old, don’t even know what a “poser” is, but if it has something to with becoming a coach of the year candidate, you’re absolutely correct. Ref. “Pitt’s Jeff Capel Named to Naismith Coach of the Year Watch List.”

The idea is to beat the teams on your schedule. PITT grinds. They have a very experienced backcourt. All good shooters. Pesky defenders. No team should look forward to playing PITT this year. All that and some chemistry. They’re good. You should enjoy it, regardless. H2P

Too bad WVU peaked so early. Duquesne is getting even less respect than PITT. A good team has to show up both home and away. Take a look at the Power 5 standings and see how many have winning records on the road. And look at how many are unranked.

Big 12 doesn’t have a Louisville, GA Tech, Fla St, BC or ND- The five worst Power 5 teams by a pretty substantial margin, with the exception of Cal. To claim otherwise is just nonsense. Big 12 is head and shoulders above

You believe too much of what the sportswriters say. Come to the games. UVA trounced Louisville Wednesday by 3 whole points. Glad Wake Forest didn’t unvell the 1 – 3 – 1 until too late. Florida State is a team I fear, Lloyd Hamilton’s teams are always long. Gave Nelly Cumins fits in the first game. Will see VT on Saturday and GT comes to the Pete on Tuesday. Be there.

A few points: 1. It’s Cummings. 2. It’s Leonard Hamilton 3. Louisville is 3-22 4. Florida State got crushed by Stetson and Siena. And while I’d love to be there, it’s a bit of a commute from Philly. I do get to a few football games every season.

BC and FSU both had injured stars. FSU has played quite well in the last 6 games and beat Miami today. Barely lost to them earlier. Louisville is playing mostly sophomores. Takes longer for younger teams to gell. Whatever happened to the Philly teams not named Villanova?

Only one team in the Big 12 has a winning road record. Kansas. WVU has only 2 conference road wins. They couldn’t win ANY Power 5 conference. Last years NCAA champion – UNC – was beat twice by PITT. PITT also has wins over 5 ranked teams. WVU has how many?

Hopefully, (a much improving) Pitt gets to play WVU again in the tourney and makes this pompous dude eat crow.

Seems like Erik is trying really hard to justify why WVU is only 4-9 in league play. Whatever helps you sleep at night dude.

That was the start of the season when Capel didn’t know what to do with Hughley and the team simply didn’t gel yet. I’m fairly certain Pitt would smack them now.

Well your “certainty” aside, the only truth is that WVU crushed them . So he absolutely has the right to express an opinion based on actual results

Sir, you have to know in your heart that was a VERY different PITT team. Night and day. I fully expected that trouncing and I wasn’t disappointed. Now, though…..different game completely. And Nelly and the boys would be a little chippy. Payback game.

May or may not be the case. It couldn’t be much less competitive. Having said that, Mr. Reynolds definitely has license to chirp.

He can talk all he wants. If WVU is 5 games better than any ACC team then they should easily win at least one game in the tournament. Don’t care what anyone says or where any computer ranks Pitt. Just get in the tournament and we will see who gets to talk loudest in the end.

Rather than chirp about how his team might perform in some “what-if” fantasy league, maybe Mr. Reynolds should be a little more concerned about their 4-9 conference record.

He’s right about the ACC having a very down year. I think he exaggerates just a tad, thinking that WVU would win it by five games, though. These guys had a five game losing streak to start conference play this year that included a loss to the now 3-10 OU Sooners. Maybe don’t lose to the worst team in the conference and you won’t have to complain that you’d have it better somewhere else.

The Sooners that beat’Bama by 23? And just beat KState by 14? Coached by a guy that took Loyola to a Final Four? Maybe actually beat WVU before trashing what one of their players has to say.

Yeah, that’s the same team that lost to Sam Houston State early on, lost by 30 to TCU, had to eke out a win against South Alabama, and got obliterated when they played WVU again a few weeks ago. I mean…kudos to them for having some nice wins on their resume, I guess, but they still stink.

You can cherry pick wins on anyone’s schedule, dude. It’s basketball. Bad teams beat teams they have no business beating all the time.

I believe we would beat WVU today. Yes. Say what you want, point to results, fine. But saying we’d probably beat WVU today is as fair a point as this WVU turd saying they’d win the ACC by 5. You can’t defend that comment then belittle Pitt fans for saying they’d beat WVU if the game were played today and not the 2nd game of the season. You seem smart enough to realize that.

NEVER visited Morganhole while in the band. Deemed too dangerous for that reason.
Passed on this year’s game for the same reason. I curse Scott Barnes every time WV comes up. Hope Heather resists the WV fans and the sportswriters and doesn’t extend the football series nor mbb. Cost us a shot at the Coastal title because of the injuries sustained in that game.

Can we all just agree that the Big 10 is overrated and move on? How do they get 9 teams projected to the dance?
