Could Duquesne MBB Be CBI Bound?

Multiple sources speaking to Pittsburgh Sports Now on the condition of anonymity have stated that the Duquesne Men’s Basketball Team would be interested in competing in the CBI if that opportunity were to be made available.

To date, Duquesne is 20-12 overall and a 10-8 Atlantic 10 slate earned the Dukes, the sixth seed in the conference championship.

The Dukes fell in that tournament 81-70 Wednesday evening and the possibility of extending their season has clearly been considered.

HappeningHoops.com ran a CBI bracketology Friday which has Duquesne in the field.

When Duquesne Vice President of Athletics Dave Harper spoke in an exclusive interview with PSN, he did not confirm this potential opportunity.

Harper did make the trip to Barclays Center and acknowledged this possibility of extending the team’s season.

“We will evaluate postseason opportunities as presented to us,” Harper stated. “There are pros and cons with structures and how the team feels. It’s prime recruiting season and once we look at it wholistically if the opportunity presents itself that everyone will embrace that won’t hamper our recruiting efforts, then we will move forward.”

In previous seasons, coach Keith Dambrot was reluctant to accept a CBI bid, but that thought process has changed since the tournament would have a real feel for it.

The CBI once featured teams playing in each other’s gyms, but this year’s event is Mar. 18-22 at Ocean Center in Daytona, Fla. In a discussion earlier this season, Dambrot was more receptive towards the idea of playing in this event.

Things certainly could change, but the CBI is a 16-team event and time will tell if Duquesne is one of those teams competing.

“We had some initial conversations as seasons were ending, but the focus was on the games at hand,” said Harper. “Now that the season ended, we’ve talked more extensively and are prepared to make a decision if given the opportunity. There’s pros and cons with everything, but just as long as we balance opportunities and focus on recruiting which is just paramount this time of year.”
