2024 3-Star RB Tre McLeod Holds Pitt In Top 3 Ahead of Visit This Weekend

Pitt’s emphasis on the eastern side of the state has already resulted in two commitments in the class of 2024, and there could possibly be another on the way.

Tre McLeod — a 5-foot-11, 190-pound three-star running back from Cheltenham High in Wyncote, Pennsylvania — is making an unofficial visit to Pitt’s spring practice today, checking out Pittsburgh up close for the first time.

McLeod cut his list offers to just eight at the end of 2022, narrowing his 19 offers to a final eight that includes: Pitt, Maryland, Syracuse, Cincinnati, Penn State, Texas A&M, Nebraska and Ole Miss.

Pitt has been in on McLeod since Day 1, extending his first official offer almost two years ago, and the relationship between Pitt (safeties coach Cory Sanders, in particular) and McLeod has been steady the whole way.

“I’ve talked to the defensive coach, coach Sanders,” McLeod told PSN. “He’s been up to my school a couple of times. We’ve been talking for a couple of years now since I’ve had that offer.”

It’s been a real good relationship with Pitt, and with a visit to check out how Pitt conducts a practice and getting to see the facilities on the South Side for the first time, he just wants to see if it feels like home. If it does, well, that’s a key factor in his recruitment.

And while Pittsburgh may be a cross-state drive to where his home currently is outside Philadelphia, there are some guys from home who are already out there. Javon McIntyre was a former teammate of McLeod’s and they’ve been talking.

McLeod’s friend Jahsear Whittington is already committed to Pitt’s class of 2024, and after hearing the way he’s hyped Pitt up, he couldn’t stay away.

“(Whittington) likes it,” McLeod said. “He likes it a lot, so I had to go up there and see it for myself.

McLeod prides himself on being a playmaker, in all phases of the game, and his latest campaign showed he’s capable of carrying an offense. He watched a lot of Israel Abanikanda at Pitt last season, and he feels like there’s some similarity there.

As a junior at Cheltenham, McLeod was an elite all-purpose threat — much like Abanikanda was at Pitt in 2022. He ran the ball just 87 times, but he racked up 936 yards (10.8 yards per carry) and six touchdowns. And he added 141 yards and a touchdown on five kick returns.

247Sports rates McLeod as the 500th-ranked recruit in the class (31st-ranked running back and 11th-ranked recruit from Pennsylvania) while On3 rates him as the 446th-ranked recruit in the class (40th-ranked running back and 11th-ranked recruit from Pennsylvania).

Rivals rates him as the 47th-ranked running back and the 19th-ranked recruit from Pennsylvania — holding a 5.7 Rivals Rating.

McLeod plans on committing on July 27, after he’s taken his official visits over the summer, and while he doesn’t have those narrowed down yet, he does have some other unofficial visits lined up for Penn State, Nebraska and Colorado.

Pitt will need to bring McLeod back as many times as possible ahead of his July 27 commitment date, but as he enters his first visit out to the university, Pitt already stands in a good place.

“Pitt is definitely in my top three,” McLeod said. “Because they run the ball, I like that. A lot of schools don’t like running the ball.”

Pitt has landed five commitments in the class of 2024 already, including Whittington (Philadelphia, Pennsylvania) and fellow running back Juelz Goff (York, Pennsylvania). He would be the fourth recruit from the state, joining Whittington, Goff and Ty Yuhas (Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania).
