PITTSBURGH — Pitt hit the field indoors at the UPMC Rooney Sports Complex Friday, for the lone Friday session this spring, in anticipation of Saturday’s big scrimmage.
With action on Tuesday, Thursday, Friday and Saturday this week, it’s been busy on the South Side. And it may end with a big scrimmage at Acrisure Stadium, weather permitting, on Saturday.
The offense has repped the blue practice jerseys so far this spring, so it will be the defense’s first chance to make a switch.
There aren’t many scrimmages in the spring, so Saturday’s action will go a long way in impressing coaches and carving out additional playing time the rest of the way this spring.
Once again, it was Phil Jurkovec and Christian Veilleux taking reps at quarterback. Jurkovec took reps with the 1s (Konata Mumpfield, Gavin Bartholomew, Karter Johnson and Bub Means) while Veilleux took reps with the 2s (Myles Alston, Daejon Reynolds, Jake Renda and Cole Mitchell).
There weren’t many quarterback drills available to the media Friday, but it was interesting to watch as Pitt ran play-action rollouts. Jurkovec was very solid, in drills and working his way through offensive teammates in between reps.
There was a large contingent of Pitt stars around the facility Friday to check out practice, and Israel Abanikanda, Marcus Minor, Calijah Kancey and SirVocea Dennis were lively — interacting with old coaches and teammates.
Pitt’s Pro Day is next Wednesday, with all four and a number of former Pitt stars taking part in front of NFL scouts, coaches and front office members.
