Pat Narduzzi wanted to quote Bill Belichick as he stood at the podium following Pitt’s spring game Saturday.

“He said it’s not about the best 53, it’s about the right 53,” Narduzzi said. “And we want to make sure we have the right 53.”

There are 85 scholarships available at the collegiate level, and Pat Narduzzi has three to work with as he evaluates Pitt’s roster post-spring game. Pitt was active in the first window, adding Phil Jurkovec, Christian Veilleux, Derrick Davis Jr. and Donovan McMillon, and I think the second window will end with a few more additions.

“You’re always gonna look,” Narduzzi said. “I’m happy with the guys we have on the roster, and to be honest, we’ve got three scholarships still available right now. So, we’ve got three already, but we’re not going to just take three just to take three. We’re gonna take the right three.”

I think Pitt will look at wide receiver, tight end and linebacker in the portal, and with California (Pa.) wide receiver JaQuae Jackson and USC tight end Malcolm Epps visiting recently, it’s clear Pitt is indeed looking.

I wouldn’t be surprised if someone like Jake McConnachie or Nick Lapi is put on scholarship either, as the surprise award is usually given just before the season begins.

The recruiting season has officially begun, but it won’t just be high school recruits Pitt is trying to bring in now.
