On Tuesday, Joe Tipton of On3 reported that Papa Kante, a highly-touted forward in the class of 2023, requested a release from his National Letter of Intent to the University of Michigan after being committed to the program for months.

Kante, a four-star prospect who played for South Kent School in Connecticut, took an official visit to Pitt last June, and later announced in September that the Panthers made his top five schools list along with Memphis, Maryland, Michigan, and Rutgers.

According to Kante’s high school coach Raphael Chillious, Pitt was Kante’s first ever offer back when he was a young prospect in high school.

“That’s always something important in the relationship & recruiting process,” Chillious told PSN in July.

The Panthers currently have two open scholarships after landing transfers Ishmael Leggett (Rhode Island) and Zack Austin (High Point) in the past two weeks. Pitt’s incoming freshman class includes Jaland Lowe, Carlton Carrington, and Marlon Barnes. 247 Sports ranks the Panthers’ class as the No. 32 class in the country, headlined by Lowe, who is now ranked as the No. 74 player in the nation.

The Panthers’ current front court includes Blake Hinson at the four, as well as Federiko Federiko at the five. Both Guillermo Diaz-Graham and Jorge Diaz-Graham will come off the bench down low, along with wing William Jeffress.

Check out Kante’s highlights from last year’s EYBL play.
