PITTSBURGH — Jeff Capel remembers looking up Dick Groat while he was a student-athlete at Duke in the mid-90s.
It wasn’t as easy as it is today, but he definitely found out exactly who the legendary Dick Groat was. He wasn’t able to meet the former Duke All-American — a ridiculously accomplished man in baseball, basketball and broadcasting — until 2014, but the pair formed a quick, easy friendship.
Capel reflected on the passing of his friend Thursday morning at the Petersen Events Center, speaking to the goodness and humanity of Groat and how Groat impacted his life — and Pitt basketball — for the better.
