Playing college football in the United States at the Power Five level wasn’t even on Moritz Schmoranzer’s radar a few years ago.
But times have changed for Schmoranzer and now it’s not a matter of if but where he’ll be displaying his talents.

Two years ago, Schmoranzer moved from Germany to the United States and for the first time in his life, he started playing organized football in Roanoke, Virginia.
In his first season, Schmoranzer, who’s a tremendous athlete, started off as a wide receiver before being switched to the offensive line last season. After just one year, Schmoranzer has gotten the attention of college programs, including the Pitt Panthers.
On Tuesday, the 6-foot-4, 270-pound offensive guard received an offer from Dave Borbely and the Panthers. Prior to that offer, he’d received ones from Virginia Tech, Wake Forest, Appalachian State, Coastal Carolina, James Madison, Liberty, Ohio University, Old Dominion, Virginia and West Virginia.
“Pitt’s offensive line coach called me with the news,” Schmoranzer told PSN. “It’s pretty funny, he was a coach at UVA when my defensive coordinator (Ken Taylor) played there. He told me that he talked to him about me. The offer from Pitt is a great offer. It’s very exciting. I just received it, so I haven’t had much time to look into it but I’m definitely going to do that now.
“I’ve only had two years of tackle football experience. Considering last year was my first year playing offensive line, I think the coaches like my athleticism. I have been playing soccer since I was three and running track. Before that, I also played flag football in Germany. Coaches like have fast that I’m able to move for my size.”
The news from Pitt, while exciting, has forced Schmoranzer to make a change in his recruiting plans. Prior to yesterday, he announced that he was narrowing down his recruitment to Wake Forest and Virginia Tech. However, following the offer from Borbely, Schmoranzer tells PSN that he’s going to have to re-consider things.
“This is hard. After I dropped my top two, I felt as though I didn’t think I’d get any better offers or any more offers at all. Then I had Pitt offer and a lot more schools, who haven’t offered yet, are showing interest in me. Now, I’m going to really have to think about things and probably open my recruitment up to more schools. I’m interested in Pitt. I’m not just going to be like thanks for the offer but no thanks. I really have to think about everything.
“As far as my visits, I just made a visit to Wake yesterday for an unofficial because my parents flew in from Germany for the week so I could take them,” said Schmoranzer. “I’m taking them to Virginia Tech tomorrow, and I’m thinking about already visiting Pitt with them. But I’m not totally sure about that yet and have to talk to them.”
Currently, Pitt has 10 commitments in their Class of 2024, with two of those coming from offensive lineman in three-stars Jiavani Cooley and Adham Abouraya.
