Pitt Contacts Rutgers Transfer Paul Mulcahy

With transfers committing left and right around college basketball, the market for a solid veteran guard — what Pitt seems to be looking for — has become much more competitive.

On Friday, a big name hit the portal that fit that description: Paul Mulcahy.

Mulcahy is a 6-foot-7 guard out of Bayonne, New Jersey, who played four seasons for Rutgers. The graduate transfer had another strong season for the Scarlet Knights in his senior campaign, averaging 8.3 points and 4.9 assists per contest to go along with 3.6 rebounds.

Mulcahy’s junior season (‘21-22) numbers were slightly better, as he averaged nine points per game and set career highs in nearly every major statistic, including three-pointers made (26 for 75).

Recruiting insider Adam Zagoria reported that Pitt reached out to Mulcahy on Friday, along with several other programs.

The difficult part about recruiting transfers who enter the portal this late is that there are several big-name programs still searching for talent. In addition to Pitt, Kentucky, Kansas, Gonzaga, and a long list of other programs all reached out to Mulcahy on Friday, making this one a tight race for the veteran guard.

The Panthers have added guard Ishmael Leggett out of the portal, as well as wing Zack Austin. They also brought in freshmen guards Carlton Carrington and Jaland Lowe, and return redshirt freshman Dior Johnson.
