Pitt has been renewing old Big East rivalries over the last two seasons, and while there won’t be another one renewed this season, it’s coming in the future.
UConn football announced on Twitter that Pitt will play a home-and-an-away with the Huskies in 2027 and 2028. The matchup in 2027 will be played at Acrisure Stadium on Oct. 30, 2027 and the matchup in 2028 will be played at Pratt & Whitney Stadium on Nov. 4, 2028.
It’s the renewal of a Big East rivalry that has not been played since the 2012 season.
Pitt is 4-5 all-time against UConn, dating back to the inaugural meeting in Storrs, Connecticut in 2004 — a 29-17 Huskies win.
The two sides largely traded wins throughout the late 2000s and early 2010s, with Pitt’s last victory over UConn coming in the 2011 season — a 35-20 win at what-was-then Heinz Field in which Tino Sunseri threw for a career-high 419 yards and two touchdowns.
There have been some wild games played between Pitt and UConn, including a 46-45 double overtime UConn win in 2006 and back-to-back one score games in 2009 and 2010.
UConn has struggled mightily in recent seasons, failing to win more than six games in every season dating back to 2010. And if last season’s 6-7 record isn’t counted, the Huskies haven’t won more than three games in a season since 2015.
UConn is off to an 0-3 start this season under head coach Jim Mora.
Pitt’s future non-conference currently includes:
2024 — Kent State, Cincinnati, WVU and Youngstown State
2025 — Central Michigan, WVU, Notre Dame
2026 — Wisconsin
2027 — Wisconsin, UConn
2028 — Notre Dame, UConn
We will have a chance to win, assuming Cignetti is gone by then.
Home and away with UCONN?
This gives a chance if the game is played at a neutral site like Fenway or somewhere else.
